UNDERSTANDING THE 3 CATEGORIES OF WATER DAMAGE

When your home or business experiences water damage as a result of flooding or other natural disaster, it is critical to act quickly in order to clean up and restore the property. STOP Restoration of Edison offers the necessary damage repair services to bring your home or business back to its pre-disaster condition. Let us help you understand the 3 types of water damage as specified by the IICRC.

Category 1 Water Damage: Clean Water

This is the least amount of water damage that can occur, with it only affecting a minimum amount of area. This water is considered “clean water” because it is sewage and toxin-free. Clean water includes water damage from broken pipes, water supply lines, sinks and bathtubs that overflowed.

Category 2 Water Damage: Grey Water

Grey water poses health risks due to significant levels of contamination of bacteria, mold and/or chemicals. This includes dirty water from washing machines, dishwashers, as well as leaks from water beds, broken aquariums and urine. The water restoration technician should wear personal protection equipment (PPE). The carpet padding is usually removed and replaced because its sponge-like structure offers the perfect environment for bacterial and mold growth. If left untreated, it can become Category 3.

Category 3 Water Damage: Black Water

Black water is the most extreme type of water damage and requires quick action to mitigate serious health risks. Typical black water conditions occur from a sewer back flow, a broken toilet bowl containing feces, and rising flood waters. Rising flood water is considered Category 3 because of the possibility of chemicals and organisms found in lawn chemicals, fertilizers, animal feces, decaying ground debris, and over filled sewer and septic systems. When Category 3 water damage occurs, many items and materials must be removed from your property.
